Swimming Facts

  • There are four different strokes: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle.

  • One length of the pool is 25 yards, two lengths of the pool is 50 yards, four lengths of the pool is 100 yards, eight lengths of the pool is 200 yards, etc…

  • The order of the Individual Medley (IM): Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle.

  • In a 200 IM the swimmer will swim 50 yards of each stroke.

  • In a 400 IM the swimmer will swim 100 yards of each stroke.

  • The order of the medley relay: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle.

  • There are 4 swimmers on a relay.

Diving Facts
  • DD is the Degree of Difficulty.

  • The spring boards are 1 meter and 3 meter.

  • The platforms are 10 meter, 7.5 meter, and 5 meter.

  • There are six directions in diving: forward, backward, reverse, inward, handstand, and twister.

  • The diving score is created by:  three judges with three scores, added together, and multiplied by DD.
